David Starr Jordan High School is located in the Los Angeles community of Watts. The school was named after David Starr Jordan, the first president of Stanford University. Jordan High School is one of the few high schools in America to produce several Olympic gold medalists, including Hayes Edward Sanders, Florence Griffith-Joyner, and Kevin Young.
In 2011, LAUSD and the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools joined together to transform Jordan High School into an arts academy. Since then, Jordan has made tremendous strides in academic performance. In 2011-12, Jordan High School made a dramatic 93 point jump in its Academic Performance Index (API), the largest increase among traditional high schools in LAUSD. In 2013, Jordan High School welcomed its new Wellness Center facility that serves families from the school and the surrounding community.
